About the Book
Concerned about your retirement finances? Relax! You can capitalize on today's market turmoil and enjoy a sound and secure financial future. Cash-Rich Retirement is the book shown on public television that explains a new action plan that will help you.
Author Jim Schlagheck sees increasing financial turbulence ahead. Pension under-funding, Boomer demographics, and America's "flip" investment psychology may cause financial distress. Cash-Rich Retirement provides guidance on the full range of the country's most recent and needed financial products to counter these threats: multiple annuities, "fundamental" indexes, mutual and exchange traded funds, reverse mortgages, and insurance.
Whether you've already retired or are many years away from retirement, Cash-Rich Retirement will help you. It:
- Opens your eyes to the investment turbulence that Boomer retirements are likely to cause, and shows you how to avoid collateral damage.
- Lays out a comprehensive, step-by-step action plan in "layman speak" for getting and staying on track with your retirement savings — from how to open and automatically feed different investment accounts to what investments to consider holding in them.
- Shows you how to diversify, protect, and enlarge your 401(k) and other retirement holdings so that your investments generate real returns — real income! — with fewer losses and powerful compounding effect.
- Explains how to build a "ladder" of annuities that will provide different income streams during different phases of your retirement — and you don't need to be a multi-millionaire to implement this sure-fire income strategy!
- Enables you to get a decent night's sleep and avoid retirement "high anxiety" — now and in the future — knowing that your retirement investments are prudently sheltered from the economy's real estate fallout and next bubble.
All in, Cash-Rich Retirement brings you the kind of investment guidance that ultra-wealthy families enjoy in private banks — the very institutions where Jim has spent most of his professional career. Published by St. Martin's Press, Cash-Rich Retirement is available online and in bookstores throughout the country. It is the book spotted in public television's "Retirement Revolution" series.

Jim Schlagheck is a wealth management specialist, the author of Cash-Rich Retirement, and the co-producer of "Retirement Revolution", the public television series on better retirement preparedness. He has guided high-net-worth families, endowments, trusts — as well as average-Joe and Jane investors — helping them to protect and enlarge their wealth for more than 25 years.
Over the span of his career, Jim has led teams of successful portfolio, brokerage, mutual fund, real estate, trust, and financial planning professionals. He served as a senior officer of a well-known Swiss private bank in Geneva — "TDB American Express Bank" — serving the investment needs of mega-wealthy individuals around the world. At American Express Bank, he also launched a family of mutual funds currently holding more than $4 billion of client monies.
Jim also headed the North American activities and hundreds of employees of Bank Julius Baer, the Swiss private bank, and he led the North American "Wealth Management and Financial Planning Division" of UBS, the world's largest private bank.
Jim recently headed the private banking division of TAIB Bank, one of the first banks in the Middle East to narrowly focus on wealth management. In that post, Jim oversaw asset management, real estate, and brokerage specialists, helping Gulf billionaires protect and enlarge their wealth.
All in, Jim brings a "wealth" of investment management experience to his readers. A graduate of Georgetown University and the Wharton School of Finance, Jim speaks publicly across the country, and lives in mid-coast Maine.

These kinds of accounts allow your savings to grow without tax dilution. They give you powerful compounding advantage.

P/E Ratio
My book Cash-Rich Retirement explains how you can use "P/E" or Price/Earnings ratios as a crude tool for apprising the reasonableness of any investment's (or entire market's) pricing level. Some investments (and some markets as a whole) may be over-priced and poised for correction. You want to avoid big correction losses with your retirement savings. P/E ratios are a crude but directionally helpful way of sizing up whether an investment is overpriced and perhaps dangerous.
The following links give you helpful P/E information. I personally use the P/E Ratios computed by Yale University's Dr. Robert Shiller. His numbers will help you understand the pricing levels of U.S. stocks relative to earnings. My book will help you make investment decisions based on this information.

Letters to Employers
As you prepare for and defend your retirement, it's time to become a lot more pro-active about your future. Here are two letters that will help.
Use the "Letter Regarding Funds" to let your employer know of important funds that you want in your 401(k), 403(b) or similar plan. You want high-quality funds and indexes that produce low-volatility, attractive returns. Hence, copy this letter. Customize it. Put in your employer's name and address. Let your employer know that you want access to high-quality funds like the ones listed in Cash-Rich Retirement.
If you qualify for a traditional pension or so-called "defined benefit plan" — whether from your current private-sector employer or any past ones — ensure that your employer has adequately funded your pension plan. Many plans are seriously under-funded and will not be able to pay out benefits as planned. Therefore, use the "Letter Concerning Pensions". Customize it. Ask your employer(s) to give you confirmation from an independent auditor that your pension and retirement benefits are adequately funded at this time.

Objective Research
Many people select investments on the basis of "top performance" or an in-law's "hot tip". However, sky-high performance and "hot tips" are not skillful selection criteria. That's why I urge investors to focus on income fundamentals — that is, the ability of an investment to generate income for you at a reasonable price — and to screen investments as well using objective research.
My book Cash-Rich Retirement explains the importance of objective research — and explains how to actually use it. Spend several minutes to explore the following sites and become acquainted their research. Use my book to learn how to use their data. You only need to invest a few minutes each quarter to put free, strictly objective research to work for you. Cash-Rich Retirement shows you how.

Annuities
Annuities are an important way of investing tax-effectively and can generate income for life! Cash-Rich Retirement takes the mystery out of annuity investing. It describes a novel way of building a "life-cycle" ladder of annuities to produce income throughout your span of retirement time. And you don't have to be a millionaire to invest in annuities!
You can buy annuities using your 401(k) or IRA proceeds one day. You can buy annuities using some or all of your home equity if and when you sell you house. You can buy an annuity each year with your savings or, if you qualify, some of your annual bonus. Or you can buy an annuity making periodic "installment" payments.
Cash-Rich Retirement explains annuities in more detail and describes ways to buy and structure them to give you income throughout your retirement for the rest of your life. Learn more about these important investments with my book and with these web sites.

Reverse Mortgages
Many Americans are counting on home equity as an important — often, their sole — source of retirement income. My book Cash-Rich Retirement explains why this strategy is dangerous. It also explains how "reverse mortgages" work, showing you when such loans can be advantageous and when they are certainly not.
Reverse mortgages are "rising debt" loans. Cash-Rich Retirement walks you through the mechanics and benefits of such debt. The book explains why these mortgages are among the most costly. It shows you whether such debt is, after all, right for you.
